An army veteran who stole back his dog from the RSPCA and choked an inspector has been given community service.

43-year-old Shane Van Duren's therapy dog was taken in when it was spotted roaming the streets in 2015 - he busted the animal out of the rescue shelter in Weston and when police and RSPCA inspectors arrived at his house, he held one in a headlock and choked another.

Van Duren pleaded guilty to assault and strangulation.

The judge took his post-traumatic stress disorder into account and he's been handed a suspended sentence of two years, with 200 hours community service.
