It's emerged prison staff attempted to resuscitate a man who died in the Alexander Maconochie Centre over the weekend.

Justice Minister Shane Rattenbury has told the ABC, after the man's cellmate reported concerns, staff performed CPR, but he died a short time later.

Mr Rattenbury confirmed police are investigating the circumstances and a coronial inquest will begin.

He says at this stage, he has no details to suggest a link to methadone, as in the case of indigenous inmate Steven Freeman who died last year.
