A three-year-old boy had to be rescued from a hot car in the Territory on Monday.

With summer approaching, ACT Police and the Emergency Services Agency have issued a joint warning on the dangers of leaving children unattended in a parked vehicle.

A member of the public was able to remove the distressed and over-heated three-year-old from the unlocked car via the window.

However, Belconnen Patrol Sergeant David Wills says the outcome could have been much worse.
