Canberrans Won't Be Taken For A Free Ride

Category: Capital Radio News

The Government won't accept the Opposition's suggestion that buses should be free on the weekend for Canberrans left on the side of the road because of services being cancelled.

Shadow Transport Minister Candice Burch floated the idea saying free transport would provide an insentive for the government to fix it's faltering network as soon as possible, as reports indicate there have been nearly 2,500 failures since it was implemented.

This idea was quickly shot down by Transport Minister Chris Steel. Who assured journalists today the government was investigating ways it could provide better insentives for bus drivers to work on the weekend - stopping short of providing penalty rates - saying drivers were already provided monetry insentives in their agreement to take on work over the weekend.

"We're currently working through a range of different options. We're consulting with the transport workers union and bus drivers about what might be available so that more bus drivers can work on the weekend," Mr Steel said.

New drivers will start in the network shortly, with recruitment for a further 36 drivers underway. Mr Steel also shot down the idea of free travel, after the government provided a month of free travel that coincided with the start of the new transport.

"Our focus is on providing reliability of services particularly on the weekend," Mr Steel said.

It's the latest problem in a growing list of headaches for the new Transport Minister, late last month residents of Tuggeranong voiced their displeasure at losing their local bus services, and businesses in Anketell Street have voiced their concern about buses potentially running on the street in the future.
